Academic Council Debate Forum

American software dependency

Contribution to Academic Council Debate Forum by Anders Laage Kragh, AIT

Søren Hauberg wrote in a debate article about DTU's dependence on American software as both criticizable and inconsistent with, as a technical university, going in new directions, developing and  testing new software. I couldn't agree more.

An example of the fatal consequences of this dependency is what has happened to the judges of the International Criminal Court, ICC, who have had their e-mail accounts, credit cards and bank accounts blocked - simply because USA disagree with ICC.

It is therefore necessary that we get alternative solutions for American-based IT, and this can only be done by supporting and using these alternatives where they exist. It will be difficult and not without costs. But if we don't do it, Europe will never get its own solutions and alternatives – and it won't be in line with the new strategy point 2 "EUROPEAN LEADERSHIP IN CRITICAL TECHNOLOGIES"

As a first step, DTU could stop using X and Meta products (Facebook and Instagram) - this will be completely free and in line with the new strategy point 5 "SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT AND DEMOCRATIC RESPONSIBILITY" - X and Meta have a strained relationship with facts and democratic accountability with their lack of editorial responsibility for the content on their platforms.
