The certification is the result of a focused effort that began in 2024. Since then, CAS has mapped energy consumption across DTU’s campuses in Lyngby, Ballerup, and Risø, developed a common energy policy, and identified the areas with the greatest potential for energy savings. At the same time, concrete targets and action plans have been established, and the organization has strengthened its capabilities to work systematically with energy management.
By achieving ISO 50001 certification, DTU has committed to continuously improving its energy performance. This requires both technical solutions, strong management support, and everyday awareness.
Behavior Drives Energy Consumption
The mapping process shows that DTU’s largest energy consumers are, unsurprisingly, ventilation systems, cooling production, heating, and specialized equipment used in laboratories and workshops. Other significant energy users include lighting, servers, IT equipment, and hot water.
Reducing energy consumption requires a combination of technical solutions and behavioral change. DTU’s energy use is heavily influenced by the activities taking place in its buildings. For this reason, behavior is a central element of energy management, both across campus and within the organization itself.
