Position Structure

The position structure defines the framework for the terms of employment for scientific staff (VIP) in conjunction with the collective agreement for academics employed by the Danish state.

Research assistants primarily carry out tasks related to research and/or teaching. A minor part of the working hours may be used for professional development and other duties.

Qualification requirements: Master’s degree

Type of employment: Fixed-term scientific position

Employment period: Up to three years

Re-employment beyond three years is not possible

Termination upon expiry of the employment period without further notice

Pensionable supplement: DKK 37,200 annually (as of 31 March 2012)

Employment is in accordance with the collective agreement for academics in the state sector

PhD students follow an individual study programme. In addition, tasks may include dissemination, research, teaching, library work, or other academic duties as assigned by the institution.

Total tasks must not exceed 840 hours during the three-year study period

Tasks are typically agreed upon for one semester at a time, with mutual commitment

Qualification requirements: Master’s degree

Type of employment: Enrolled as a PhD student at DTU in a DTU-funded or externally funded position

Employment period: Three years for full-time studies

Non-pensionable supplement: DKK 14,900 (as of 31 March 2012) for base salary level 4 and above

Employment is in accordance with the protocol to the collective agreement for academics in the state sector

Postdocs primarily engage in research, but may also undertake teaching and other tasks to a limited extent.

Qualification requirements: Scientific qualifications at PhD level

Type of employment: Fixed-term scientific position

Employment period: Up to four years at the same university

The position is generally full-time, but part-time employment is possible

Employment may be extended due to parental/adoption leave or long-term illness

Pensionable supplement: DKK 49,300 annually (as of 31 March 2012)

Employment is in accordance with the collective agreement for academics in the state sector

Assistant professors and researchers are employed in DTU Tenure Track positions to attract and develop scientific talent from around the world. The position is a career development position, where—after a period of up to six years—you may transition to a permanent position as associate professor or senior researcher, subject to a positive academic assessment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Research, including publication and scientific dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including examination duties
  • Innovation and knowledge exchange with society
  • Other duties as determined by the department

Career development and support:

  • You will be offered pedagogical supervision and guidance
  • Participation in the UDTU course is mandatory
  • You will be assigned a mentor focusing on personal and professional development
  • Annual evaluations and a mid-term evaluation will be conducted
  • At the start of employment, the DTU Tenure Track Career Plan is completed to define development goals

Qualification requirements: Scientific qualifications at PhD level

Type and duration of employment:

  • Career development position lasting up to six years
  • Previous postdoc employment may be credited
  • The assessment deadline may be extended due to parental/adoption leave or long-term illness
  • Pensionable supplement: DKK 49,300 annually (as of 31 March 2012)
  • Employment is in accordance with the collective agreement for academics in the state sector

Special conditions:

  • DTU generally does not employ researchers/assistant professors on a fixed-term basis
  • Fixed-term employment is possible if funding is granted to a named individual
  • In such cases, employment may occur without a job posting, and the employee will leave upon expiry of the grant
  • An assessment must be made regarding the possibility of subsequent employment in a DTU Tenure Track position based on a job posting

Job security:

You are guaranteed an academic assessment without a job posting and may transition to permanent employment as associate professor or senior researcher if deemed qualified. You will receive support from the department throughout the process in the form of mentoring and ongoing evaluations. Please note that no DTU employee is guaranteed lifetime employment, and termination may occur in accordance with applicable regulations.

Tenure Track documents

Main responsibilities include research, research-based teaching, innovation, knowledge exchange with society, research management, supervision and mentoring of assistant professors and researchers, as well as academic assessment tasks. The position may also include research-based public sector consultancy.

The university determines the specific distribution of tasks, which may vary over time.

Qualification requirements: Documented scientific output/publication and research potential at an international level.

Ability to contribute to national and international collaborations, including dissemination of research results and contributions to research-based societal innovation.

Employment is in accordance with the collective agreement for academics in the state sector.

Pensionable supplement: DKK 91,282 annually (as of 31 March 2012).

DTU generally does not employ researchers/associate professors on a fixed-term basis, unless funding is granted to a named individual.

The professorship is a leadership position with responsibility for strengthening and developing a scientific field. Main responsibilities include research, research-based teaching, and potentially research-based public sector consultancy. Tasks may also include knowledge exchange with society, participation in public debate, research and education management, supervision, and academic assessment.

Qualification requirements:

  • A high degree of original scientific production at an international level
  • Documented teaching experience at multiple levels, including PhD level
  • Experience in research management or innovation
  • Ability to develop the field in terms of research and teaching
  • Contributions to research-based public sector consultancy and external collaborations
  • Additional requirements may include knowledge and technology transfer, patenting, and collaboration with external partners

Type of employment: Permanent

Salary: Salary grade 37; personal reclassification to salary grade 38 is possible

Main responsibilities include research, research-based public sector consultancy, and dissemination to authorities, industry, and society.

Qualification requirements: Documented scientific output/publication and research potential at an international level

Ability to contribute to national and international collaborations and research-based societal innovation

Type of employment: Permanent

Employment is in accordance with the collective agreement for academics in the state sector

Pensionable supplement: DKK 91,282 annually (as of 31 March 2012)

The position involves full-time teaching and related tasks at DTU’s Admission Course. Teaching assistant professors receive pedagogical supervision and guidance with the aim of qualifying for the title of teaching associate professor.

A written assessment of teaching qualifications must be provided no later than six months before the end of the sixth year of employment.

Upon a positive assessment, the title of teaching associate professor is awarded.

Type of employment: Permanent

Employment is in accordance with the collective agreement for academics in the state sector

Pensionable supplement:

  • Teaching Assistant Professor upon employment: DKK 34,100 annually (as of 31 March 2012)
  • Teaching Assistant Professor after 3 years: DKK 43,900 annually (as of 31 March 2012)
  • Teaching Associate Professor: DKK 71,800 annually (as of 31 March 2012)

Students employed as teaching assistants are covered by the agreement for Student Instructors (SUL). Other teaching assistants are covered by the agreement for external lecturers and teaching assistants at universities.

  • Teaching assistants carry out independent teaching tasks or teaching that supplements higher-level instruction.
  • Employment normally requires a professional level equivalent to a Master’s degree.
  • Employment is fixed-term and may last up to three years.
  • A maximum of two extensions is allowed, corresponding to three appointments in total.
  • Teaching assistants may work a maximum of 780 hours per academic year.
  • The hour cap applies collectively to all concurrent teaching assistant positions.
  • The specific number of hours must be determined before the start of the semester.

The position includes teaching, grading, examination, and preparation.

Employment requires either relevant high-level practical experience or employment in a scientific position at another university.

External lecturers are normally expected to hold another job alongside their university employment.

Employment may be permanent or fixed-term.

Fixed-term employment is normally for three years and may be extended twice.

The number of working hours must not exceed 500 hours annually.

Exceptionally, this may be increased to 780 hours if necessary for teaching planning.

The justification must be documented and archived in the personnel system.

The specific number of hours must be determined before the start of the semester.
