Guest researchers/guest PhD students
Corporate HR offers assistance to non-employed guest researchers and guest PhD students with regard to registrations and permits, as well as by providing information about relocating to Denmark. Whether the guest needs a work and residence permit, a visa, or an EU residence permit depends on a number of factors. Please note that it may take up to two months to issue a work and residence permit.
Guest researchers and guest PhD students on short-term stays (less than three months) are not covered by the Danish health care system, and they have to take up private health care insurance.
Please find more information about the proces of inviting an unpaid guest researcher here

If you are working at DTU Offshore-Danish Offshore Technology Centre, DTU Engineering Technology, DTU Entrepreneurship or DTU Learn for Life and have invited a guest researcher or a guest PhD student, you will need to send an invitation letter together with other information (please check the link above) to Corporate HR. Please find the invitation templates in the fact box.
If you are working at other departments than mentioned above, please use the Guest Researcher System in which all guests are to apply and register for a research stay at DTU, and from which an Invitation Letter will be generated automatically. Please send the following link to your guest and ask him/her to register: https://guestresearcher.dtu.dk/
Stay under 3 months:
Health Insurance
If your stay in Denmark is for less than 3 months, you cannot obtain a social security number (CPR number) or a health insurance card. We therefore encourage you to obtain private insurance coverage. Before travelling to Denmark, please make sure to check that you have an appropriate travel insurance covering health care, accident and liability insurance during your full stay at DTU. We recommend doing the same for any accompanying family members.
Liability and accident insurance
Before travelling to Denmark, please make sure to subscribe to a liability insurance and an appropriate accident insurance that covers your full stay as a guest at DTU. We recommend doing the same for any accompanying family members.
Housing assistance
It may be possible to book guest accommodation on DTU’s Lyngby campus for a minimum of one month, depending on availability. Please contact your department or institute for guidance and assistance with on-campus housing options. You are also welcome to contact the DTU Housing Foundation (Boligfonden DTU).
They may be able to assist, depending on availability. Visit BDTU Housing or reach out via email at acco@adm.dtu.dk.
Tax
You should not be tax liable to Denmark if your salary and all expenses related to your temporary stay in Denmark are supported by a foreign entity (a university or company based abroad). However, there are certain instances that might trigger Danish taxation. It is mandatory that you contact the Danish tax authorities and clarify your specific tax liability. +45 72 22 27 95
Stay over 3 months:
Health insurance
Once you have received your social security (CPR)-number, you are covered by the Public Danish Health Care Service. This also applies to your accompanying family members. However, please note that it might take some time to get your social security (CPR)- number in place. Therefore, we recommend you check with the health insurance in your home country, if you are covered during your first time in Denmark and if not, take out additional private insurance. If you are EU/EEA-citizen you can check with the health authorities in your home country, if you are covered by the blue EU-health insurance card.
Liability and accident insurance
Before travelling to Denmark, please make sure to subscribe to a liability insurance and an appropriate accident insurance that covers your full stay as a guest at DTU. We recommend doing the same for any accompanying family members.
Housing assistance
DTU Housing Foundation (Boligfonden DTU) offers housing subject to availability. For more information and to apply, visit BDTU Housing or contact acco@adm.dtu.dk. When applying, please keep in mind that you will need to present proof of your address in Denmark in order to receive your social security (CPR) number. Your lease contract must be valid for at least 3 months from the date you register for your CPR number.
