Career info about alumni on LinkedIn

LinkedIn has created pages for all universities with sub pages that display information about alumni - based on the educational information people have themselves added in their LinkedIn profile.

About 90,000 persons have added an education from DTU in their LinkedIn profile, and you can find them in this overview: https://www.linkedin.com/school/technical-university-of-denmark/people/
The overview shows data grouped within five areas, sorted by number of persons

The overview is searchable and interactive:

  • You can specify an interval of years for the education (Start year/End year)
  • In the search box you can search for job titles, keywords and companies/organizations across profile
  • You can also click on the information in the overview for further delimitation

The dashboard will constantly adjust and display numbers and search results that match the criteria you have chosen.

Below the overview, an updated list of the specific persons who match the criteria is displayed, and here you can see with how many of the alumni you have a personal connection on LinkedIn in degree 1, 2 and 3+.

Here, for example, the search is limited to alumni from the period 2005-2015 with jobs at Novo Nordisk in the US

Advantages of data on LinkedIn

  • Access to a large amount of data, which is likely regularly updated by the alumni themselves
  • Anyone with a LinkedIn profile can use the tool and quickly generate interesting key figures and find relevant individuals

Disadvantages of data on LinkedIn

  • There is no quality check of the data (all information is added by the users themselves, and there are, for example, significant differences in how alumni have named their educations)
  • Data is owned by LinkedIn and is made available on LinkedIn's terms
  • Contacting individuals requires a personal connection or a paid LinkedIn profile
  • It is not possible to contact multiple people/a group of alumni at once
APR Stakeholder Management maintains DTU's alumni database, where alumni are continuously added with contact and educational information from STADS. The information in the alumni database is updated and maintained continuously, including data from the CPR register and the alumni themselves.

The alumni database also records basic job information (job status, job title, organization, experience with entrepreneurship) – currently available for about 15,000 alumni.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to harvest/transfer data from LinkedIn, but as far as possible, links to alumni's personal profiles on LinkedIn are registered, where job history, etc., is accessible.

Additionally, information about alumni's other relations to DTU (participation in activities, engagement as guest lecturers/mentors, etc.) is recorded – and not least, information about consents and interests, which makes it possible to send newsletters, invitations, lifelong learning offers, and other targeted messages to larger or smaller groups of alumni.
