Check before downloading and installing new software

Software and apps from unknown sources or sources not approved by DTU may contain malicious features. Always check whether DTU already provides an approved solution before downloading, installing or using a new digital solution.

At DTU, we use a wide range of digital tools for research, teaching, administration and collaboration. However, when you download software or an app, you may get more than you expect.

Malicious software, also known as malware, can give unauthorized individuals access to your computer, your data or DTU’s systems. This also applies to software supplied with cameras, sensors, laboratory equipment and other technical equipment.

Stop and think before downloading
Before downloading an app, installing software or using a new digital tool, ask yourself:

  • Do I need this solution?

  • Does DTU already provide an approved solution?

  • What data, files or systems will the solution need access to?

  • Am I unsure? If so, I contact IT Support first.

Find a DTU-approved solution

1. Check the Company Portal
On Windows, you can find the Company Portal in the Start menu. On macOS, you can find it under Applications or by using Spotlight. Here, you can find and install software approved by DTU.

2. Use the IT search tool on DTU Inside
Search for an existing DTU solution that meets your needs.

3. Contact IT Support
Contact IT Support before downloading, installing or using the solution, if you cannot find a DTU-approved solution.

Make it a security habit
Follow this simple rule:

When I need new software or an app, I first check whether DTU already provides an approved solution.

This way, you can help safeguard DTU’s data, research, and systems.

October is Cyber Security Month

During October, we will focus on four security habits that can help protect DTU's data and systems. Under the heading "Stronger cybersecurity. Together", we present a new security habit every week.
