Enable Similarity Detection When Creating an Assignment

This tutorial shows how to enable similarity detection when creating an assignment in DTU Learn.

Follow these steps:

01

In your course navigation bar, click Assignments.

02

Click New Assignment.

03

Create the assignment as you normally would by adding a title, instructions, availability dates, conditions, and other relevant settings.

Note: Similarity detection can only be used for written submissions. It is not available for assignments that accept video or image submissions.

04

Expand Evaluation & Feedback and click Add External Tool.

05

Choose how student submissions should be stored:

  • Standard paper repository: The submission will be stored anonymously in Turnitin's global database.
  • Institution paper repository: The submission will be stored in DTU's repository within Turnitin and can only be accessed for comparison within DTU.
  • Do not store submitted papers: The submission will not be stored after processing and therefore cannot be used for future similarity comparisons.

Note: If you choose the option "Allow students to view report after submitting", remember to explain to students how the similarity score is calculated.

If you need more information about the settings under Compare submissions against and Similarity Report, see the following guide: Using D2L with Turnitin’s Asset Processor – Turnitin Guides

When you are satisfied with the settings, click Save.

06

Complete the remaining assignment settings and click Save and Close.

A similarity report will be generated for each student submission. For more information, see: Using D2L with Turnitin’s Asset Processor – Turnitin Guides

07

A similarity report will be generated for each student submission. To view the report, return to Assignments and click on the relevant assignment.

08

Click on Submissions. You will now be able to see the similarity score for each submission. You can also click on Details to open the full similarity report. For more information about interpreting the similarity score and similarity report, see:
