Supervision
A key element of the PhD programme is supervision of PhD students and the collaboration between supervisor and PhD student.
The statement is to be prepared in PhDPlanner where the supervisor will get a task three months before the end date of the PhD study.
The appropriate size of a supervisor team may vary. As a guiding rule, more than three supervisors calls for academic/professional motivation. The supervisor group should discuss their individual roles by using the alignment tool for supervisors.
If particular academic aspects justify it, a principal supervisor who is not a permanent DTU staff member may be appointed, provided that it can be documented that the prospective supervisor has qualifications at associate professor level and is permanently affiliated with DTU via externally funded employment.
In order to ensure continuity in the PhD study programme, the PhD student should as a principle rule have the same supervisor for the duration of the study programme.
The principal supervisor is responsible for:
- preparation and submission of the PhD plan together with the PhD student
- monitoring that the PhD student conducts their studies in accordance with the determined scientific contents and that the time schedule of studies is observed (half-year assessements)
- preparation of the supervisor assessment
- submission of proposal for members of the assessment committee.
