How to register a new PhD course

Ordinary PhD courses

The courses can be found in the Course Base and are at a high level in fundamental topics and will be offered more than once.

Procedure for new PhD courses

The PhD committee must approve a new course before it is created in the course base by the author. Although PhD courses are taught in English, a Danish course title must be provided. All other course information may be written in English only with the Danish version referring to the English version of the course base. For further information on course descriptions, please see Regarding course descriptions - DTU Inside.

Please see the quick guide to course base approval flow for further details about the publication of courses in the course base.

Specialized courses

Specialized courses for PhD students are offered within a limited subject field.

The individual PhD student must enter the course description in PhDPlanner to have it approved as part of the PhD study. Once the course is completed, the PhD student must upload documentation of completion in PhDPlanner.

Approval of specialized courses

Specialized courses are approved in PhDPlanner. Initial approval is granted by the principal supervisor when the student enters the course as a new activity. Final approval is granted by the head of the PhD school as part of either the PhD plan or one of the half-year reports.

Evaluation and reporting of results

Like all other courses, a special course must have a course responsible, who also evaluates the student’s work. The PhD student's supervisor may be the course responsible as well as examiner.

Evaluation of the PhD student’s participation in a PhD special course can be done in the form of a report or test. However, in connection with assessment in the form of an oral presentation, an internal or external examiner should be present.

After the assessment, the course responsible must provide the PhD student with documentation of completion. The PhD student is responsible for uploading this documentation in PhDPlanner.

Tuition fees

DTU has an agreement with most of the other universities in Denmark that tuition is free for all PhD students. However, the individual department is entitled to charge a fee for study materials, catering and the like. The same applies to students from other EU/EEA countries.
The department is allowed to charge a tuition fee for students from countries outside the EU/EEA region.

Participants who are not students and wish to follow a PhD course must pay a tuition fee. Courses may be offered under the single-course scheme which is administered by DTU Learn for Life. In that case, Learn for Life is responsible for collecting the course fee. If this is not the case, it is up to the department to collect the course fee. Please contact Learn for Life for advice on setting the course fee.
