Leave of absence
PhD students may apply for leave from their PhD studies.
Applications for leave of absence must be submitted in PhDPlanner.
The application for leave of absence must be submitted to the PhD school before the leave is commenced and no later than one month before the ending date of the PhD study. The application must be approved by the head of the PhD school.
The PhD student will not receive PhD salary during the leave of absence.
The PhD student must not work on the PhD project during the leave of absence.
Rules for unpaid leave/part-time employment for non-Nordic/EU/EEA/Swiss citizens
Taking unpaid leave or part-time employment may result in loss of work and residence permit. Please read the information provided by Corporate HR.
Rules for unpaid leave for Industrial PhD students
A special rule applies to industrial PhD students, which means that the leave cannot be granted unless the business supervisor has co-signed the application and the approval of the leave by Innovation Fund Denmark is enclosed with the application.
Maternity/paternity leave
If you are employed at DTU
Corporate HR must be informed of maternity leave no later than three months before expected birth and paternity leave no later than four weeks before expected birth. PhD students employed at DTU are covered by the maternity/paternity regulations that apply to all employees at DTU. The relevant DTU guidelines can be found on Corporate HR's pages on DTU Inside. If you are employed in a company
If you are only enrolled at DTU but not employed at DTU, you must apply for leave of absence due to maternity/paternity leave. This will result in an extension of the study period corresponding to the length of the leave of absence.
Questions regarding taking maternity/paternity leave should be directed to the company of employment.
Questions regarding extension of the study period should be directed to HR.
If you are not employed by DTU or a company
If you are only enrolled at DTU but not employed anywhere else, you must apply for leave of absence due to maternity/paternity leave. This will result in an extension of the study period corresponding to the length of the leave of absence.
