Media training
At DTU, we use our voice to strengthen democracy. This forms part of the university’s overall strategy on scientific leadership and democratic responsibility and means that DTU’s researchers actively participate in public debate by sharing their knowledge and insights.
During the media training course, you will learn how journalists and the media work and how to formulate your messages so that they get across as effectively as possible and are heard in the debate.
The course is aimed at you as a researcher at DTU. It is a strategically prioritized initiative, so the department’s management must always be involved in selecting which researchers are to participate in the media training.
Each course has space for six participants. The department may choose to run additional courses if more researchers require media training.
It is important that, after the course, you have the time and inclination to continue communicating your knowledge in the media. This can be done either by agreeing to interviews with journalists or by writing your own opinion pieces.
The course is divided into two modules and takes place at DTU over two half-days. It is possible to take the entire course or just a single module. The first module focuses on the media and interview techniques. The second focuses on the structure and composition of an opinion piece.
The course consists of a mix of lectures and exercises. In module one, a TV interview will be conducted with you and the other participants. In module two, you will work in workshops on the content, angle, and form of a debate piece.
The media training is delivered by two trainers.
The course equips you to participate in the public debate.
In the first module, you will gain the tools to understand how journalists and the media operate and learn how to effectively convey your knowledge and messages in interview situations.
In the second module, you will gain the tools to structure and construct a debate contribution with compelling content and argumentation. By the end of the course, you will have written your first opinion piece, which journalists from DTU’s Department of Communication and Media will help to edit and get published in the media.
The entire course takes place over two half-days, a few weeks apart. It is possible to take just one of the two course modules, each lasting half a day.
You will need to set aside time for course-related homework. Before module one, you will meet with one of the tutors for about one hour to identify the key messages in your research.
Before the second module, you must conduct research and identify suggestions for analyses, data, or other material that can support the arguments in the debate contribution you are to write after the course day.
The department covers the course’s expenses: camera crews, catering, etc.
These amount to approximately DKK 4,000–5,000 in total for module one. For module two, the only expenses are for catering.
Media training is part of DTU’s strategic focus on scientific leadership and democratic accountability. Therefore, the department’s management must always be involved in the planning.
