Media training
DTU wishes to be visible in the media and in public debates. All researchers are therefore encouraged to contribute their knowledge when contacted by journalists or by contacting the media themselves with new research or knowledge relevant to the resolution of important social issues.
DTU’s media training course is offered to departments and researchers as part of a strategic effort to promote good media relations.
The media training equips the participants to handle enquiries to and from the media – both when it comes to publicizing good stories from DTU and to handling critical events. The participants become aware of why DTU employees should make themselves available to the media and how to do so. They also learn about journalists’ working conditions and the agreements that can be made with journalists.
Media training is for heads of department, management groups, experts in their research fields, or others who have or want to have contact with the press.
Participants learn to engage with the media and handle press enquiries in a professional and appropriate way.
The course also provides insight into what you can do to have an influence on the media’s news agenda and their dissemination of research.
The media training alternates between presentations, discussions, and practical exercises, where you’re interviewed by a journalist. We’ll bring a camera so that you can watch the interview yourself afterwards.
The course is run by two or three instructors. This allows for parallel teaching, exercises, and feedback in different rooms simultaneously.
The course goes through:
- What to do before, during, and after the interview
- Contracts and agreements with journalists
- Media, target groups, and languages
- Journalistic working methods
- Interview exercises in front of camera with direct evaluation
The media training lasts one morning or afternoon, about four hours.
Between 5 and 10 people can participate in the training.
2-3 people from DTU Communication will carry out the training, depending on the number of participants. The participation of a freelance journalist may be necessary, the cost of which will be borne by the participants and will total approx. DKK 10,000 (depending on the choice of journalist).
Students from Media Lab will also participate in order to operate one or two cameras depending on the size of the group – any costs of this are borne by the participants. These can be costs of preparation, packaging of equipment, transport, setup, preparation for interviews, etc.
Successful media training requires proper preparation.
DTU Communication allocates 3-4 hours per participant for preparation of interviews and a total of 10-20 hours for coordination with the staff who manage the location of the course, with the other participants from DTU Communication, Media Lab, head of department/research group manager, et al.
