Ordinary pension scheme

Ordinary pension scheme
The ordinary pension scheme applies according to the collective agreement for academics in the state covering your employment. It applies regardless of whether you are a member of scientific or technical/administrative staff.

If you do not choose another pension solution, this scheme will apply.

Each month, the University will transfer a percentage of your basic salary and pensionable supplements to your pension fund.

If you are employed under the collective agreement for state-employed academics, 17.1 per cent of your salary and pensionable supplements are reserved for pension.

Taxation and government duty
The ordinary pension scheme is an 'employer-administered pension scheme' according to the Danish pension taxation rules. This means that the monthly pension contributions paid into this pension scheme are not taxed. They are left out of account when your taxable income is calculated. In Danish taxation terms, this is called 'bortseelsesret'.

Instead, the pension payments from your pension fund will be taxed, when your pension fund pays out your pension savings upon retirement according to the applicable rules. Today, the savings are taxed as salary at the appropriate rate according to your taxation status at the time of payment.

If you choose to take out your pension savings before retirement - which is only possible, if you move abroad, e.g. upon expiry of your employment contract - you will be charged a government duty of currently 60 per cent.

Pension is a very important matter, and DTU recommends that you obtain individual counselling from the relevant pension fund and from SKAT (the Danish tax authorities) regarding your pension taxation based on your specific circumstances.
