Emeritus at DTU

Purpose

The DTU emeritus scheme enables faculty retirees to maintain their association with their department.

The establishment of an emeritus arrangement requires that the department and the retiree have a mutual interest in maintaining their association.

Arrangements to maintain post-retirement association with a department are made on an individual basis.

Duties

As emeritus status does not designate a position of employment, the following apply

  • Emeriti receive no pay
  • Emeriti are not permitted to undertake duties comprised by the AC collective agreement, which means for example that emeriti may not perform duties comprised by faculty appointments, as described in the appointments structure
  • Emeriti can thus not assume responsibility for teaching and/or course provision in the department
  • Emeriti are not permitted to make statements on behalf of DTU or the department

Emeriti are permitted to assist the department with the following:

  • One-off lectures
  • Assistance in connection with exercises for students/course attendees
  • Academic dissemination activities and ad hoc supervision of students
  • Participation in international or national commissions or committees within research areas in which DTU is interested in maintaining presence

Activities in which emeriti participate or to which they contribute are promoted at departmental level.

Workstations

Where possible, the department will place a workstation with PC and telephone at the disposal of persons holding emeritus status. Arrangements can also be made for access to laboratories or research equipment.

The department and each emeritus faculty member agree on the period in which the individual is to have this workplace at his or her disposal; typically for 12 months at a time.

Insurance status

For purposes of insurance and compensation, emeriti enjoy equal standing with salaried DTU staff.

This means that if a person with DTU emeritus status sustains an injury, he/she will be comprised by the Danish Industrial Injury Insurance Act, and will likewise be held liable for any actions that are the cause of injury.

Approval and entry into force

The Policy concerning emeritus status at DTU was approved by the Executive Board and discussed by the Cooperation and Joint Consultation Committee (HSU) in March 2017.

The guideline becomes effective from the time it is published on DTU Inside.
