Extensions and Fixed-Term Employment
When considering an extension of a fixed-term scientific staff (VIP) position, three regulatory frameworks must be observed:
- The Executive Order on Job Postings
- The Act on Fixed-Term Employment
- The Position Structure
Executive Order on Job Postings
As a general rule, all positions must be publicly posted. However, there is an exception for scientific staff:
It is possible to hire without posting for up to one year and extend once—also without posting—for up to one year.
Act on Fixed-Term Employment
A scientific staff position may be extended no more than twice.
Position Structure
Maximum employment periods are defined for certain scientific staff positions:
- Research Assistant: Maximum of 3 years at the same university
- Postdoc: Maximum of 4 years at the same university
This means a scientific staff member may have up to three appointments in the same position:
- One appointment via public posting
- Two extensions without posting, each for up to one year
Fixed-Term Researchers and Assistant Professors
At DTU, it has been decided that researchers and assistant professors are generally not employed on a fixed-term basis.
However, fixed-term employment may exceptionally occur if funding is granted to a named individual.
In other cases, reference is made to DTU Tenure Track.
Fixed-Term Senior Researchers and Associate Professors
It has likewise been decided that senior researchers and associate professors are generally not employed on a fixed-term basis.
Exceptionally, this may occur if funding is granted to a named individual.
