Warning signage for storage of chemicals and flammable storage units

When storing large quantities of chemicals, doors to ventilated chemical cabinets or doors to storage rooms could be equipped with the following warning sign:    (with the tagline: "Chemicals")

In addition, if the storage room contains toxic, corrosive, radioactive or flammable chemicals, warning signs must be present for these specific acute hazards.

Particularly for toxic substances

Toxic substances and products (defined as acute toxic, or chemicals labelled STOT SE 1, or mutagenic, toxic for reproduction, or mutagenic in category 1A ell 1B - see Kemibrug.dk) must be stored locked. Doors to ventilated chemical cabinets and optionally doors to storage rooms must be equipped with the warning sign:

Particularly for corrosive substances

Corrosive substances and products must be stored under eye level, or approx. under 160 cm.  When storing large quantities (5-10 L) of corrosive substances, doors to ventilated chemical cabinets and optionally doors to storage rooms must be equipped with the warning sign:

Particularly for radioactive substances

When storing radioactive substances, doors to ventilated chemical cabinets and doors to storage rooms must be equipped with a special warning sign:

Particularly for flammable substances

When storing large quantities of flammable liquids (5-10 L), doors to ventilated chemical cabinets and doors to storage rooms must be equipped with a specific warning signs:

In addition, if the chemical cabinet contains flammable liquids with a flash point below 30°C (no volume limit), doors to the ventilated chemical cabinet must be equipped with a special warning sign:

Storage units for flammable liquids

Special rules apply to the amount of flammable liquids that can be stored. In this context, there are some terms, that are important to be familiar with:

  • A flammable liquid is a liquid with a flash point not exceeding 93°C.
  • A combustible liquid is a liquid having a flash point above 93°C and not more than 370°C.

The flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off vapors to the air in sufficient concentration to ignite.

Flammability classes for flammable liquids:

  • Class I: Flammable liquids with flash point below 23°C.
  • Class II: Flammable liquids with flash point of 23°C - 60°C.
  • Class III: Flammable liquids with flash point above 60°C and not more than 93°C.
  • Class IV: Combustible liquids with flash point above 93°C and not more than 370°C.

Definition of storage units

The term "storage unit" is used to determine the maximum allowable amount of flammable liquids to be stored. The volume of a storage unit depends on the flammability class of the liquid in question.

Flammability class / storage units

  • Class I: A storage unit is 1 liter
  • Class II: A storage unit is 5 liters
  • Class III: A storage unit is 50 liters
  • Class IV: A storage unit is 250 liters

Storage of flammable liquids

Stocks in buildings, rooms and laboratories (Stocks include chemicals that are stored as well as chemicals that are in use - for example in the production process):

  • 25 storage units per room or
  • 50 storage units per laboratory / fire cell.
  • 800 storage units per fire section.

Fire sections with production sections or storage sections may only be placed on the ground floor. If this is not the case, the fire section must be approved by the municipal council.
