ECTS activities

Types of ECTS activities that can be approved as part of the individual PhD study at DTU.

DTU courses

DTU’s PhD schools offer PhD courses on an ongoing basis via DTU’s course database.

MSc courses can be approved in special cases when the supervisor and the student justify the relevance of the individual course.

NB: the course 'How to write a scientific paper' (course no. 88555) is regularly offered by HR. It is listed in the employee course database.

PhD students can also participate in PhD courses offered by other educational institutions in Denmark and abroad.

PhD specialized courses

A PhD specialized course may be created for individual or small groups of PhD students.

Any member of the scientific staff at DTU may be course responsible for a PhD specialized course, including the PhD student’s supervisor.

The individual PhD student must enter the course description in PhDPlanner to have it approved as part of the PhD study. Once the course is completed, the PhD student must upload documentation of completion in PhDPlanner.

Mandatory courses

The following two courses are mandatory for all PhD students at DTU unless they have acquired similar competences elsewhere:

  • Supervision and facilitation of learning (course no. 88550).
  • Sustainability Evaluation and Communication (course no. 12950/12951/12952).

Other relevant ECTS activities

PhD students may plan to participate in other ECTS activities and courses which support the individual PhD student’s research project or further career. These activities may be:

  • journal clubs
  • international summer schools
  • seminars
  • ad hoc courses
  • online courses (Coursera and the like)
  • conferences.

The list is not exhaustive.

For information on how to register activities in PhDPlanner, please view the short tutorial available here.

The individual PhD student must enter the description of the activity in PhDPlanner to have it approved as part of the PhD study. The principal supervisor as well as the head of the PhD school approve ECTS activities registered by the PhD student.

Once the activity is completed, the PhD student must upload documentation of completion in PhDPlanner.

To have a result/ECTS credits for an external course or activity registered, the PhD student must provide documentation of completion in PhDPlanner.

Results/credits for courses taken at DTU are registered based on communication and approval by the course responsible. The PhD student is not required to take any action.

A complete overview of results for the various courses and acitivites completed during the PhD study can be obtained in the list of activities in PhDPlanner. The 'Grades and study confirmation' available at student.dtu.dk should not be used as it only contains information about courses from DTU's course base, kurser.dtu.dk.

If you are missing ECTS for a DTU course, please consider the following:

  • The course number you have registered yourself must be identical with the course number used by the course responsible when registering the exam results. E.g. the course Sustainability evaluation and communication which has three course numbers, 12950/12951/12952, depending on when it runs. Please contact HR via the DTU Serviceportal if you need help sorting this out.

  • Lack of course number. If you initially listed a DTU course in the previous system PhDigital without course number, the course cannot be matched with an exam result as this is based on course number alone. Please contact HR via the DTU Serviceportal if you need help sorting this out

  • The exam result may not yet have been reported in the grading system by the course responsible. Please consult the course responsible first, and subsequently the Study Administration, phdcourses@dtu.dk.

Good to know

  • Enter the course numbers in the section 'DTU courses' in the PhD plan

  • Find course descriptions and registration instructions in the course database
