Guideline on childcare days

GUIDELINE

As a parent you are entitled to two annual days’ leave of absence to care for a child (“omsorgsdage”) until and including the calendar year in which your child turns 7. The child must be”staying” with you, meaning that the child must be living with you permanently or spend time with you on a regular basis.

Childcare day may not be taken before the birth of the child, and the annual entitlement expires with the end of the calendar year.

The following childcare day may however be transferred to the next calendar year:

  • childcare days from the calendar year in which the child is born/received
  • childcare days which you are prevented from taking because you are on maternity, adoption or parental leave for a full calendar year

Childcare days, which are not taking, will be transferred automatically at the end of the year.

Applicability

The foregoing rules are applicable to staff employed as civil servants (i.e. by the State) as of 1 October 2005 or later. The rules apply irrespective of whether the child was born/received before or after 1 October 2005 and before or after the member of staff became a civil servant.

If you became a civil servant prior to 1 October 2005, the new rules are applicable only to children born on 1 October 2005 or later.

For staff with unused childcare days from before 1 October 2005, the old rules apply, which means that this leave must be taken before the child reaches the age of 18.

Registration of child care days

Registration of childcare days in DTU Fusion varies based on the following situations:

If you have taken maternity leave during your employment at DTU:
you must register your child in DTU Fusion. See guide M12 - register child in connection with maternity or paternity leave.

If you join DTU directly from another position in the civil service and

Your child was born before 1 October 2005
you must register the child in DTU Fusion and upload documentation, e.g. copy of the birth certificate. Please cross out the last digits of the CPR no. and documentation from the previous employer for the remaining days of care. See guide M3 – Request care days.

Your child was born after 1 October 2005
you must register the child in DTU Fusion and upload documentation, e.g. copy of the birth certificate. Please cross out the last digits of the CPR no. and documentation from the previous employer for the remaining childcare days in the calendar year you are employed. See guide M3 – Request care days.

If this is your first employment since graduation or your previous employment was under a local or regional authority or within the private sector, and your child was less than 7 years of age on the date of your appointment to DTU:

you must register the child in DTU Fusion and upload documentation, e.g. copy of the birth certificate.
Please cross out the last digits of the CPR no. and documentation from the previous employer for the remaining days of care. See guide M3 – Request care days.
