Maternity/paternity leave

When planning your leave, there is a general framework you should be aware of. You should generally note that the maternity/paternity leave and parental leave regulations distinguish between the entitlement to take leave of absence, the entitlement to some periods of full pay during the leave, and the entitlement to receive benefits.

At DTU, such leave is governed by the existing legislation—the Danish Act on Entitlement to Leave and Benefits in the Event of Childbirth (Barselsloven)—and the Agreement on Maternity, Paternity and Parental Leave, which regulate the entitlement to leave of absence with pay. You can read more about the conditions for your situation as either mother, father, adoptive parent or co-mother on the following pages.

  • Under the Danish Act on Entitlement to Leave and Benefits in the Event of Childbirth, parents are overall entitled to the following leave in connection with childbirth: four weeks’ pregnancy leave, ten weeks’ maternity leave, two weeks’ paternity leave and 2 x 32 weeks of parental leave. There is also the possibility of extension or deferment.
  • According to the rules regarding entitlement to leave and benefits in the event of childbirth the parents are overall entitled to full benefits for 48 weeks after the childbirth. The weeks of maternity/paternity benefits after childbirth are generally divided between the parents who live together with 24 weeks to each.
