Announcements for lecturers
DTU is rolling out a new plagiarism detection tool for Student assignments Turnitin.
As of 9 October, DTU will transition to Turnitin as its new plagiarism detection tool for written assignments.
Turnitin is integrated with Assignments in DTU Learn, making it easy for instructors to enable plagiarism checking for student submissions.
Guides
- Enable plagiarism checking for new assignments
- Enable plagiarism checking for existing assignments (created before 9 October)
When Turnitin checks a submission, the text is compared against a wide range of sources, including web content, publications, and previously submitted papers. The results are presented in a Similarity Report, where you can view matching text and the sources from which the matches originate.
The Similarity Report helps you review the outcome of the similarity check, but it does not determine whether plagiarism has occurred. A text match is not necessarily plagiarism. Quotations, references, bibliographies, and correctly cited source material may also generate matches.
The similarity score indicates how much of a submission matches other sources. However, there is no specific similarity score that automatically constitutes plagiarism or academic misconduct. Each case must be assessed individually based on the nature of the matches and how the sources have been used.
In addition to DTU Learn, Turnitin will also be integrated with Digital Exam and Online Exam (Plagiarism check in CampusNet).
We have contacted the supervisors we identified as having assignments scheduled before the integration with Online Exam is available. If you require plagiarism checking during this period and have not been contacted by us, please feel free to contact us through the Service Portal (search for "Support and Guidance - Digital Learning tools")

Would you like to see how the new tool works? We are hosting a webinar for instructors where we will demonstrate:
- How to use Turnitin
- How to access and interpret a Similarity Report
- How to review matches and sources identified by Turnitin
Date: 19 October, 12:00
Registration: Webinar
The webinar will be recorded and shared on the Turnitin information page, where you can also find additional information about Turnitin and user guides for DTU Learn.
If a similarity check raises suspicion of plagiarism or other forms of academic misconduct, you can find DTU's guidelines and information about the subsequent process on the Academic Misconduct page on DTU Inside.
