Centrifuges

Due to improper operation, centrifuges have been the cause of many accidents. Use of centrifuges must meet the following 10 requirements:

  • Centrifuges should only be used by qualified personnel who have read the manual and are familiar with the guideline for use of centrifuges
  • Centrifuge must stop when the lid is opened
  • Centrifuge must be secured against unbalance - loop contact must be able to stop the centrifuge
  • The centrifuge in operation must be stable. The rotor must always be level. Loose parts must not be released during use
  • Do not exceed the maximum speed specified on rotor equipment. The speed regulator must ensure this
  • Centrifugation of hazardous substances or biological agents must take place in tightly closed centrifuge tubes
  • Centrifuges must not be used in potentially explosive areas or for centrifuging large quantities of flammable liquid
  • Only use packaging, tubes and bottles in accordance with the supplier's guidelines
  • On some centrifuges the rotor must be re-tightened before each run
  • All centrifuges must be inspected at least once a year by the supplier or other expert

Leave the centrifuge with a partially open lid to avoid condensation. The rotor and centrifuge chamber should be cleaned regularly.
