What to do when an energy saving light bulb or fluorescent tube breaks
Energy saving light bulbs and fluorescent tubes contain a small amount of mercury, which is dangerous for the environment. Some of the mercury is in the form of vapour and this part represents together with solid mercury a potential health risk if the bulb breaks. Pregnant women are more sensitive to mercury’s harmful side effects.
Venting:
Open windows to air out and close doors to avoid vapour from spreading. Leave the room while airing out and make sure that no one has access to the room for at least 30 minutes.
Cleaning:
Do not use vacuum or broom – this will make the mercury spread in the room. It will also cause contamination of the vacuum or broom.
Use thick rubber gloves. It is best to use nitril gloves. Otherwise one can use a plastic bag for picking up pieces of glass/mercury.
Small remains can be picked up with a small piece of stiff paper or tape. Wipe off the area afterwards with wet kitchen roll.
Mercury/pieces of glass, used paper, tape, gloves etc. are then put in a tight sealed container (ex. jam jar or plastic bucket with lid).
Carpets/rugs or furniture with mercury remains are taken outside for cleaning and airing. If this is not possible then air out extra good.
Disposal of waste:
The sealed container is put in a plastic bag and sent to KommuneKemi. Hand it over to the chemical waste responsible person or waste responsible person.
