What is a patentable invention?

A patentable invention is an invention that fulfils the following four criteria:

  • It is significantly different from known technology and not self-evident for a professional
  • It is new and unknown by the public prior to the patent application
  • It has an industrial application
  • It is reproducible

As a DTU employee, and if and when you have made an invention, it is mandatory to submit a Notification of Invention (NoI) via the innovation responsible at your department and email it to the patent administration office. Please refer to the guide under the tab “Submit a Notification of Invention” to the left.
