Extension of the submission deadline for final projects
For all final projects, the agreed project period is binding when the project has started.Exemption must therefore be applied for via the board of exemptions (DMDU or CMDU) if the student wishes to extend the project period; however, the department board of studies may grant from one up to a six weeks extension of the project period, cf. curriculum,'s rules for final projects.
It is expected that the board of studies use the entire 'scale' from one to six weeks so that no precedent is set for students automatically receiving 3 or 6 weeks extension. The decision must be made on the basis of concrete, individual assessment.
In an attempt to unify the practice at the various departments, some common guidelines have been made, which are close to the practice that the boards of exemptions follow:
- These must be extraordinary, unforeseen circumstances.
- Project extension must be supported by the project supervisor. The supervisor must always confirm circumstances surrounding cooperation with a company and technical problems and the like.
- The application must be accompanied by the necessary documentation e.g. a medical certificate, death certificate, statement from relevant persons, etc. Remember to treat the application/documentation with confidentiality.
- The application must be accompanied by a revised project plan (BEng projects excluded) as well as an indication of when the extraordinary problems occurred.
Extraordinary, unforeseen circumstances may, for example, concern the following:
- Documented physical or mental illness of the student or illness/death in close family
- Birth/maternity leave - these are usually not unforeseen circumstances, but there may be circumstances which the study board nevertheless, based on a pragmatic assessment, believes may justify a postponement of the submission deadline.
- Circumstances regarding collaboration with company
- Circumstances regarding the supervisor, e.g. change of supervisor
- Technical problems such as:
- Equipment has been stolen or broken
- Special equipment has been ordered for test trials, but the equipment has been delivered with a delay
