Child’s illness
Child’s first and second sick day
As an employee, you can take full or partial leave with pay to care for a sick child on its first and second sick day when:
- The child’s condition requires it
- Circumstances in the workplace permit it
- The child is under 18 years of age
- The child lives at home
Whether a child’s illness justifies leave will depend on a specific assessment of the illness and the child’s age. The decisive factor in all cases is that there is a need for care.
The second sick day is the calendar day immediately following the child’s first sick day, regardless of whether it is a working day or a day off. The first and second sick days may be taken independently of each other, i.e. you can take leave on the child’s second sick day even though you did not take leave on the child’s first sick day.
You should also be aware that the two days of leave are not random absence days in connection with the child’s illness. The right only covers the first and second sick day of a child’s illness.
