Employed researchers and employed/enrolled PhD students, EU/EEA/Swiss citizens

EU citizens may freely enter Denmark and remain in the country for up to three months without an EU residence permit.

If the employee/enrolled PhD student is staying in Denmark for more than three months, he/she needs an EU residence permit. The application for the EU residence permit has to be submitted before the expiry of the three-month period.

The employee/enrolled PhD student is allowed to start working before the EU residence permit is issued.

Accompanying family members
Family members who accompany or join the employee/enrolled PhD student may also get a registration certificate on the condition that the person having the primary right of residence has established real and actual residence in Denmark.

If the family member is not an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen, a residence card will be issued.

Process at DTU
The HR coordinator automatically receives an offer of employment/employment letter from the HR Administration or an offer of employment/enrolment from the PhD Administration.

After receiving the above-mentioned letter, the HR coordinator sends the new employee/enrolled PhD student guidelines on how to apply for an EU residence permit.
