Snow clearing (Lyngby and Ballerup Campus)
When the weather gets cold, Campus Service recommends that care be shown when moving about on DTU’s outdoor areas. Snow and ice can make campus a slippery experience, whether you are on foot, bicycle, or car.
In the winter, the snow clearing team from Campus Service sometimes works around the clock to keep the outdoor areas cleared of snow. The purpose is to ensure that traffic on campus runs as safely and smoothly as possible.
Read more about the snow clearing work below:
- The general snow clearing duty applies from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. During these hours, snow clearing must have begun.
- If snow clearing has begun at DTU, but not all places have been cleared yet, this is referred to as ‘overall snow clearing’, which means that you must show caution on slippery and snowy roads.
- The guard will call Campus Service if there are slippery road or snow conditions that need to be dealt with.
- The weather determines when a call-out can be made to handle the task.
- The many different types of road and pavement surfaces on Lyngby Campus are treated with different types of means for snow and ice control. On the tiles, only gravel is used, as the tiles do not tolerate salt. At and around the entrances to the buildings, other thawing agents are used that do not attack concrete and linoleum. As an added advantage, they are effective down to approximately minus 10 degrees, unlike ordinary salt. Salt and gravel are used on asphalt roads, but here problems arise with the use of salt at minus 7-8 degrees, where it ceases to be effective. Snow and ice control works best when there is plenty of traffic that can contribute to removing layers of snow and ice.

Winter at DTU
Did you know that there are often people working to prepare the campus while you sleep?
During the winter period, people from Campus Service Parks and Roads often start at 2 AM to clear snow or combat icy conditions, so everything is ready when students and staff arrive.
