Special situations
Special situations, such as becoming a solo parent or having multiples, can affect your overall leave and entitlements.
Deadlines and Requirements for Solo Parents
For notification of the expected birth, refer to the sections for “When You Become a Mother” or “When You Become a Father/Co-Parent”.
No later than 6 weeks after the child is born, you must complete this form and upload it in DTU Fusion.
Leave as a Solo Parent
As a solo parent, you are entitled to an additional 22 weeks of extra leave with parental benefits, giving a total of 46 weeks of leave. This applies if:
- The child’s other parent dies before birth
- You are a single adoptive parent
- You, as the mother, have conceived via assisted reproduction with an anonymous donor
- You, as the father, have had the child via a foreign surrogate mother who is not legally considered the mother in her birth country
Udbetaling Danmark assesses whether you meet the criteria for being a solo parent. If you are a solo parent, your entitlement to paid leave increases by 10 extra weeks, meaning you can receive up to 26 weeks of paid leave + 10 additional weeks with pay. As a solo parent, you may transfer up to 32 weeks of leave with parental benefits to a close family member.
Taking leave as a Close Family Member
A close family member can be one of your parents or an adult sibling. If you have a child with a known donor, it can also be one of the donor’s parents or adult siblings.
In other words, this person must be the child’s grandparent, aunt/uncle, or similar close relative.
As a close family member of a solo parent, you are entitled to take the transferred leave. This leave is unpaid and must be taken before the child turns 1 year old. If you are entitled to parental benefits, you can apply for them. Learn more at Lifeindenmark.dk.
Deadlines and Requirements for the Close Family Member
You must notify your manager at least 8 weeks before the start of the leave.
In this connection, you must complete this form and upload it in DTU Fusion.
13 weeks of Additional Designated Multiples Leave
If you are a parent of multiples born on or after May 1, 2024, you are entitled to 13 weeks of multiples leave with pay.
If there are two legal parents, both parents receive 13 weeks of multiples leave each. The 13 designated weeks cannot be transferred between parents. Multiples leave must be taken within the children’s first year of life.
Parental Benefits
To be entitled to parental benefits during your leave, you must meet the general conditions at the start of your leave, including the employment requirement. Learn more about the employment requirement at Lifeindenmark.dk or contact Udbetaling Danmark at +45 70 12 80 64.
Transferring Multiples Leave to a Social Parent
Multiples leave can be transferred to one or more social parents after the birth of the children. The parent transferring the leave does not need to meet the employment requirement. However, the social parents receiving the leave must meet the general conditions, including the employment requirement—at the start of leave to receive parental benefits.
The social parent may take a maximum of 13 weeks of multiples leave, which must be taken before the children turn 1 year old.
Note that leave cannot be transferred to another legal parent. Learn more about multiples parents at Lifeindenmark.dk or contact Udbetaling Danmark at +45 70 12 80 64.
Solo Parents and Multiples Leave
As a solo parent, you may transfer up to 13 weeks of multiples leave to a social parent or a close family member. The person must meet the employment requirement at the start of leave to be eligible for parental benefits.
You retain your own 13 weeks of multiples leave, so both you and the other caregiver can each take up to 13 weeks of leave. The leave must be taken before the children turn 1 year old and can only be applied for after the children are born.
