Equipment and Infrastructure

Often, minor equipment can be funded as part of a larger application (e.g. for Innovation Fund Denmark, Carlsberg Foundation, Villum Foundation, Lundbeckfonden and ERC).

Larger equipment could be selected for funding by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science, if the equipment is part of the Danish Roadmap for Research Infrastructure.

You can lobby for funding for larger equipment at Danish private foundations, however, this should be done in collaboration with your department head.

Here you find a listing of foundations that award equipment grants:

  • Novo Nordisk Foundation - Exploratory Research Instrumentation Programme: The programme supports the development of new research instrumentation from idea to protype for the infrastructure of the future. The Programme has an annual budget of about DKK 21 million. Applicants can apply for grants of DKK 2 to DKK 7,6 million with a grant period of four years. The programme runs from 2024-2028.
  • Novo Nordisk Foundation - Research Infrastructure Programme: The programme aims to establish world-class infrastructure that can lay the foundations for innovative research at research institutions in Denmark and in industry. The grants cover both advanced equipment and highly qualified technical personnel to ensure that the infrastructure delivers high-quality results. The Programme has an annual budget of about DKK 150 million. Applicants can apply for grants of DKK 5 million to DKK 25 million with a grant period of six years. The programme runs from 2024-2028.
  • Novo Nordisk Foundation - Equipment Upgrade Programme: The Programme has an annual budget of about DKK 10 million, and applicants can apply for grants of up to DKK 3 million with a grant period of four years to upgrade and extend the lifespan of research infrastructure. Please note that this Programme only provides grants for research infrastructure previously funded in whole or in part by the Foundation through its Research Infrastructure Programme. Only for invited applicants - runs from 2024-2028.

You have to apply for minimum DKK 300.000. This type of grant is awarded to tenured associate professor/senior researcher or professor. You need to upload an official offer.
  • Villum Infrastruture: The Villum Foundation wishes to strengthen access for the best Danish research environments to cutting-edge equipment that will enable world leading research within the technical and natural sciences. Departments are eligible to apply if they have a current Villum Investigator or a current permanently employed Villum Young Investigator. DTU can apply in even years.
