Postdoc Salary

There are primarily 2 ways of securing your postdoc salary: the postdoc project is part of a larger project plan and individual postdoc fellowships..

Individual postdoc fellowships to be carried out in Denmark (NNF calls might include research stay abroad)

  • Novo Nordisk Foundation - postdoctoral fellowships within Industrial Biotechnology and Environmental Biotechnology: The proposed research must address major challenges within Industrial Biotechnology and Environmental Biotechnology. The research should be fundamental in character but have a strategic outlook to scaling potential(s), contribute to sustainability and, if relevant, increase productivity. The proposed research must involve a clear element of biotechnology. An applicant must either have a PhD or equivalent degree obtained within 6 years of the application deadline date or be a PhD student who will defend their thesis a certain amounts of months before the deadline. The postdoctoral fellowship period can be from 1 to 3 years. At least 1 year of a fellowship must be used at the Nordic host institution.
  • Novo Nordisk Foundation - postdoctoral fellowships within plant sciences, Agriculture and Food Biotechnology: The proposed research should address major challenges within plant, agricultural, and food science associated with developing sustainable agriculture and food production. The research should be fundamental in character with a clear and strategic outlook to improve sustainability and potential solutions. The proposed research should significantly extent existing knowledge beyond state-of-the-art and may have a high-risk profile. The research should be based on life science research disciplines. An applicant must either have a PhD or equivalent degree obtained within 6 years of the application deadline date or be a PhD student who will defend their thesis a certain amount of months before the deadline. The postdoctoral fellowship period can be from 1 to 3 years. At least 1 year of a fellowship must be used at the Nordic host institution. 
  • Carlsberg Foundation – Reintegration Fellowship: Two-year postdoctoral fellowships at Danish research institutions for postdoctoral fellows subsequent to an Internationalisation Fellowship from the Carlsberg Foundation or an otherwise funded research stay abroad. These fellowships are awarded to outstanding postdoctoral fellows who wish to establish independent research activities in Denmark after a research stay abroad. Applicants with more than 5 years of experience since obtaining their PhD degree are not eligible. The Fellowships are not awarded to PhDs without any previous strong connection to Denmark or Danish research, or without a previous research stay abroad.
  • Lundbeck Foundation – postdoc: The Lundbeck Foundation Postdoc Call invite applicants from any research field to submit proposals with potential short- or long-term benefits for the advancement of neuroscience and/or therapies for nervous system disorders. The grant is both for a postdoc abroad and for scientists from abroad, who wish to conduct research in Denmark. The grant is also for scientists in Denmark who wish to continue to conduct research within their current affiliated research environment and already have had at least 3 years of PhD, postdoctoral and/ or industrial training in another research environment and/or on a different research topic. The Foundation prioritises proposals that include lengthy international research experience. Your career stage is no more than 4 years post PhD. 
  • Danish Cancer Society – postdoctoral fellowship: You can apply for a 1-3 year postdoc fellowship within cancer research. 
  • HorizonEurope – Marie Curie individual fellowships (European fellowship): Here you can recruit an international researcher at minimum postdoc level to perform a 1-2 year research project here at DTU.   
  • Human Frontier Science Programme – Long-Term FellowshipThese fellowships are reserved for applicants with a PhD in a biological discipline to embark on a new project in a different field of the life sciences. Preference is given to applicants who propose an original study in biology that marks a departure from their previous PhD or postdoctoral work so as to learn new methods or change study system. 
  • Human Frontier Science Programme – Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships (CDF): These fellowships are open to applicants with a PhD from outside the life sciences e.g. in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering or computer sciences who have had limited exposure to biology during their previous training. Applicants for the CDF should propose a significant departure from their past research by changing e.g. from material science or physics to cell biology. 
  • Innovation Fund Denmark – Industrial PostdocYou can apply for an Industrial Postdoc (1-3 years) for a research project which is carried out in a collaboration between a company and DTU. The researcher is employed by the company.
  • Spar Nord Fonden - Ph.d./Postdoc-program: You can apply for PhD or postdoc salary within a specific theme that changes each year. The PI on the application has to be an associate professor or professor. 
  • Danish Data Science Academy: The main objective of the DDSA Fellowship Programme is to attract and educate excellent PhD students and postdocs within data science, achieve scientific excellence and impact, while simultaneously extending the application of data science in relevant scientific domains.

Individual postdoc fellowships to be carried out abroad (some of them with a return to DTU)

  • Danish Council for Independent Research – International Postdoctoral Grant: You can apply for up to 2 year postdoctoral grant for a research stay abroad. Calculated from the application deadline, no more than 3 years must have elapsed since you obtained your PhD. Deadline around September-October each year.
  • Villum Foundation - Villum International PostDoc - earmarked for women: If you are a woman and your PhD is less than 1 year old - and you have obtained your PhD in Denmark -, then you can apply for DKK 1-2,5 million for a 3-4 year postdoc grant (including 1-2 year international stay followed by a return to a Danish host institution of about 1 year). Please note that DTU is only allowed to submit two applications in total - thus, you cannot apply yourself, and you have to follow the internal procedure at DTU.
  • HorizonEurope - Marie Curie individual fellowships (European fellowship): A researcher at minimum postdoc level can apply for 1-2 year research stay abroad but within Europe. Deadline is in September each year. 
  • EuroTech COFUND postdocHere you can apply for a 2-year postdoctoral position at DTU or at one of the EuroTech alliance members (TUM, TU/e and I`X). Next call is expected to be open November 2020 with call deadline February 2021. Fellowships can commence at September 2021 at the earliest.
  • HorizonEurope - Marie Curie individual fellowships (global fellowships): A researcher at minimum postdoc level can apply for 2 year research stay abroad (outside Europe) and 1 year back at e.g. DTU. Deadline is in September each year.  
  • Carlsberg Foundation – Internationalisation Fellowships: Outstanding postdocs can apply for a 2-3 year research stay at leading international research institutions outside Denmark combined with a reintegration at the Danish institution.. The Foundation wishes to promote the internationalisation of Danish talents and talents developed in Danish research. Applicants with more than 3 years experience since obtaining their PhD are not eligible. The Fellowships are not awarded to PhDs without any previous strong connection to Denmark or Danish research. Deadline is 1st April each year (unsure if it is awarded also 1 October). 
  • Carlsberg Foundation - Visiting Fellowships at University of Oxford: You can apply for a 2 year postdoctoral visiting fellowship. The aim of the fellowships is to provide the most promising Danish research talents with experience from an elite institution which they can later apply in Denmark to the benefit of Danish research and their own future career.  Applicants with more than three years of experience since obtaining their PhD degree are not eligible. Deadline is 1st April and 1st October each year. 
  • Novo Nordisk Foundation – Cleveland Clinic - Denmark: Quantum-AI Biomedical Frontiers Fellowship Programme: The postdoc fellowships is for up to 3 years abroad (may include an optional return phase of up to 1 year).one year back at e.g. DTU. Deadline is usually each January. 
  • Novo Nordisk Foundation – postdoc fellowships for research abroad: The postdoc fellowships (Bioscience and Basic Biomedicine) is for 3 years abroad and one year back at e.g. DTU. Deadline is usually each January. 
  • Novo Nordisk Foundation – Postdoctoral Fellowships at Weizmann Institute of Science: You can apply for a postdoc fellowship in interdisciplinary research. It is possible to apply within all research fields covered by natural and technical sciences, under the condition, that the project is of interdisciplinary structure with potential applications to biomedicine, human health, biotechnology or sustainability. 3 years are dedicated to work at Weizmann Institute of Science followed by 1 year at e.g. DTU. Deadline around March each year.
  • Novo Nordisk Foundation - Postdoctoral Fellowships at MIT: You can apply for a postdoc fellowship in interdisciplinary research. 2 years are dedicated to work at MIT followed by 1 year at e.g. DTU. Deadline around end of January.
  • Novo Nordisk Foundation - Postdoctoral Fellowhips at University of Oxford: You can apply for a postdoc fellowship in interdisciplinary research. 2 years are dedicated to work at University of Oxford followed by 1 year at e.g. DTU. Deadline around end of January.
  • ETH Postdoctural Fellowships at ETH Zurich: You can apply for a postdoc fellowship in interdisciplinary research. 2 years are dedicated to work at ETH followed by 1 year at e.g. DTU. Deadline around end of January.
  • NNF Postdoctoral Fellowships at Uppsala University: You can apply for a postdoc fellowship in interdisciplinary research. 2 years are dedicated to work at Uppsala University followed by 1 year at e.g. DTU. Deadline around end of January.
  • Lundbeck Foundation – postdoc: The Lundbeck Foundation Postdoc Call invite applicants from any research field to submit proposals with potential short- or long-term benefits for the advancement of neuroscience and/or therapies for nervous system disorders. You can apply for 1-3 year research stay abroad if you plan to return to Denmark and continue your research. You have obtained your PhD less than four years before the application deadline. Deadline is usually in November each year.
