Occupational accidents

An occupational accident is a personal injury caused by a sudden incident such as cutting oneself, falling and breaking a leg or by experiencing an explosion in the Laboratory.

Occupational accidents and near-miss incidents are reported either by the DTU Injury app or via web interface. When the report has been processed by CAS HSE an internal report and analysis form is then forwarded to the the injured party.  The form must be filled out latest 14 days after the incident has occured. CAS HSE ensures further notification to the Danish Working Environment Service and the Labour Market Insurance via the electronical system EASY if there has been absence.

Compensation in regard to accidents

If an occupational accident causes permanent disability or reduces ones ability to work, the employee has a right to compensation. This is decided by the National Board of Industrial Injuries. The case history can drag out for quite a while, sometimes over a year. A notification generates quite an amount of paperwork and fees. It is therefore an advantage that the deadline for notification to the National Board of Industrial Injuries is 1 year from the date of the injury. That means that one can use several months to determine if the injury can give any suspicion of permanent disability and hence decide to notify the occupational accident to the Labour Market Insurance. All employees including Ph.D students are covered by this agreement.

Unlike the private labour market the state does not have insurance for industrial accidents. The  Ministry of Higher Education and Science fills the role of an insurance company and once a year DTU is charged the full compensation sum and the total amount of administration fee.

Expenses regarding treatment

DTU may only refund treatment expenses such as physiotherapy if their injury has been approved by the Labour Market Insurance.
