Explosives and peroxides
Explosive materials:
Materials and items listed as Class I substance (ADR rules).
For specific experiments in universities, smaller amounts of explosives may be produced, without permission. The production must be under the direction of a person with the necessary skills. The explosive substance must then be destroyed, because it is forbidden without permission from the chief of police (police commissioner) to store explosives.
Explosive waste cannot be delivered as ordinary chemical waste, as it must not be transported on public roads (see ADR).
Peroxide forming substances:
Substances, that forms peroxides under storage/ distillation/ evaporation.
Peroxide containing substances must not be sent to the general destruction before it is checked that the peroxide content is below the permissible limit. Substances or solutions with a peroxide content > 3000 ppm must not be transported, and the company that receives DTU's chemical waste, does not receive these materials.
In Kemibrug, section D, in the chemical safety datasheet, or at the Danish Emergency Management Agency website, the varying peroxide forming substances can be found.
Test of peroxide content:
Check at your department whether you should test the peroxide content, or for having a chemical accountable to test it.
The first time the chemical is opened, record the date on the label. Test for peroxide content ½ - or at an annual basis (after opening). Date of peroxide test and initials are listed on the label, so that other users know, that it has been tested. The chemical is discarded if the content of peroxides is approaching 1000 ppm (1g/L).

White precipitate / crystals in your liquid are a typical indication, that the peroxide content is too large. In such cases, DO NOT TOUCH the bottle. Lock the chemical cupboard and sign with a warning, so no one gets hurt. Immediately, contact your Chemical waste accountable or Chemical store accountable. These will contact Contingency of DTU on telephone no. 45253355, who will decide whether the chemical should be disposed of on site, or collected by the bomb squad, subsequently to ensure a controlled detonation. Pickup of the bomb squad is ONLY ordered through the Contingency of DTU, via the local police.
Precursors for explosives:
In the future, you must personally submit a form to the supplier before you can receive chemicals that may be precursors for explosives in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2019/1148 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 June 2019 on the marketing and use of explosives precursors, amending Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and repealing Regulation (EU) No 98/2013.
Fill out the form with the personal information. Several ask what the ID number is. It may be your passport no.
You will receive the form for precursors for explosives from the supplier at your next purchase - otherwise you can find it in appendix 3 of the EU regulation - see the link to your right (EU) 2019/1148
