Radioactive substances
Authorization
Authorization for purchasing, storage and use of open radioactive sources must be given by Sundhedsstyrelsen, Strålebeskyttelse (SIS), the State Institute for Radiation Protection, before the work commences. A Radiation Protection Coordinator must also be appointed at the Institute and must be approved by the Sundhedsstyrelsen. The duties of the Radiation Protection Coordinator are described in the Executive Order.Laboratory interior
Work with radioactive substances must only be permitted in approved laboratories. This means that Sundhedsstyrelsen inspects the premises during considering of an application. It is recommended that only a limited amount of laboratories are approved and used as isotope laboratories, as it is appropriate to concentrate the work with radioactive substances to as few premises as possible.
Radioactive Waste
Disposal of radioactive waste consists of certain rules. The rules are tied together with the authorization for use of open radioactive sources. The Institutes pack, label and transport the waste requiring handling to Dansk Dekommissionering Risø https://www.dekom.dk/affald-login/
It is the holder of the authorization that must ensure that the waste is sorted, packaged and transported correctly.
