Emergency showers and eyewash
Emergency shower equipment (wall-mounted body shower and eyewash shower) and eye wash bottles are mandatory in work areas working with e.g. acids or bases, corrosive substances, boiling water and oils, flammable liquids or gases, sanding or machining operations where dust develops. It is extremely important that chemicals can be flushed away from the skin or eyes with water, water and plenty of water. If it is necessary to go to the hospital, please bring the eyewash bottles.
Location
Emergency showers and eyewash showers must be installed in laboratories, workshops, chemical depots and other places where hazardous chemical substances and materials are used (e.g corrosive, flammable, harmful).
Body showers must be installed above the exit door.
Eye wash showers with 2 shower heads should be installed in the hand washing.
There must be no more than 15 m from a risky workplace to the body shower, eyewash shower or eyewash bottles.
The extent, number, type and location of emergency showers and eyewash bottles should always be assessed in the specific case of the local health and safety organization.
Statutory inspection
The institutes must carry out the annual statutory test of emergency showers. They must be serviced to live up to DS 15154.
It may be marked on the door frame with a sticker: date of test and by whom.
Emergency showers:
Annual test:
- Ensure that the water comes out in a "triangular" beam and that 60 L of water per minute can be supplied.
Monthly function check:
- Ensure that water is coming out and the still water in the shower is replaced with fresh water.
Eyewash showers:
Annual test:
- Ensure that the water hose is long enough for the shower to be lifted 1-1½m up from the table
- Ensure that 12 L of water can be delivered per minute (2 showerheads)
- Ensure that the vertical water jet is 10-30 cm when brushed from below and upwards
- If necessary, clean the shower head and close the covers, so that they are protected from pollution, and ready for use
Monthly function check:
- Ensure that water is coming out and the still water in the shower is replaced with fresh water.
Eyewash bottles check:
- These must always comply with the expiry date.
CAS-AB have bought test equipment for the emergency showers. Institutes located at Lyngby Campus can borrow the test equipment by sending an email to Cas-Park og Vej, Thomas H. Thorndahl and with cc: Tom Nordbo Andreassen
