Leave of absence/external stay, non-Nordic/EU/EAA/Swiss citizens

PhD students
If you have unpaid leave from your PhD studies, you will not be an active student during your unpaid leave period, and your PhD work and residence permit will lapse automatically.

DTU is obligated to inform the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) about the period of leave.

If you leave Denmark, please be aware of the rules on lapse of the work and residence permit.
However, if you hold a PhD permit issued after 1 January 2015 you may be exempted from lapsing rules.
Please consult the rules in your work and residence permit.

If you are employed in another position during your unpaid leave period, you need to apply for a new work and residence permit valid for the new position.

Please note that this permit needs to be issued before you can start working in the new position.
The application processing time is approximately one month starting from the date the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) receives a fully completed application.

A fully completed application consists of:

Please also note that you need to apply for the PhD work and residence permit again before you return to your PhD studies.

The above-mentioned also applies to your family so this means that you and your family need to apply twice.

The HR coordinator receives automatically the leave of absence letter from PhD Administration and - if you are employed at DTU during your unpaid leave period - an offer of employment from the HR Administration which is to be used for the new work and residence permit application.

After receiving the offer of employment for the new position, the HR coordinator send you a guideline on how to apply for the new work and residence permit.

If you are employed in another company/university in Denmark, please contact your new work place in order to apply for a new permit.

Researchers
Please be aware that your work and residence permit may lapse if the conditions on which your permit was granted no longer apply.

If you leave Denmark, please be aware of the rules on lapse of the work and residence permit. However, if your permit is given under the researcher scheme or fast-track scheme, you may be exempted from the above rules.
